Parents are impacted by disability in a variety of ways, once their child is diagnosed as having a disabling condition. “The Family View of Disability” is about that impact, from a parent’s perspective, not just at the time of diagnosis but in the subsequent years.
Although based on personal experience, this view also draws on the experience of other parents as well as the wealth of material made available through research. It is stressed that it is a view, a valid view, but not the only view. Course participants will get an opportunity to challenge and discuss the issues raised.
Topics cover such areas as: the process around diagnosis and disclosure, keyworking, ability/disability, seeing the child, attitudes, inclusiveness, the role of professionals, siblings, family members, advocacy & the hidden voice.
As the community appears to move towards inclusiveness, this short half day course should appeal to anyone working in the field of child disability, has an interest in the subject or who wants to learn more. It is seen as an introduction to the family view of disability.
